Titles

Book titles is my topic for today. My WIP is untitled right now but I have been thinking a lot about what title I could give it. Yesterday I did a little research on how others have come up with titles for their books. I was lurking on the forums at Absolute Write and found a couple topics about titles. I read that some people come up with their title first and then write their story around the title. Some people wait until their first draft is complete before coming up with a title. Some use a phrase found in their book as a title...How do you come up with the titles for your books and when?

The plot in my book contains a cursed amulet so I was considering using The Amulet as a title but it just sounds so generic and plain to me. I'm gonna keep thinking on this one.

  1. I like to come up with something as soon as I start the first draft. Although, I'm open to change throughout the process. Some titles I like and keep, such as Surviving Reject High, others, not so much.

It's always good to Google a title and see if any published books have used it already.

  2. I like your title choices, Jade.

Thanks for the advice about checking titles with Google. I did a search for The Amulet and found quite a few books with that title. Wiping that one off the board.

  3. Oh, I really wish I could help, but we suck at titles. The Amulet does have a nice ring to it though!

  4. I remember reading a young adult novel (when I was a young adult) called The Jade Amulet. The word "jade" gives the noun an exotic feel.

My WIP, The Sleep of Reason, deals with paintings, and that is the name of a rather famous work, but it also has a thematic tie. My character let his reason fall asleep, and that gets him in a lot of trouble.
